FAQ‑бот: ChromaDB + MCPstyle tool

Requirements

  • ChromaDB for local FAQ storage: Create a data/ folder with 23 .md files. Implement load_faq_to_chroma() that chunks the markdown, embeds with Ollama nomic-embed-text, and persists the vector store in a local Chroma collection at ./chroma_faq. Provide a search_course_docs(query, k=3) tool that queries this store.
  • MCPstyle metadata tool: Create fetch_course_meta(query) that performs an HTTP GET to a local mock server (e.g., python -m http.server) or reads a static JSON file. Wrap it as a LangChain tool (using @tool or httpx). Ensure it is the only external tool used.
  • Routing agent: Configure a LangChain agent (or LangGraph) with a system prompt that instructs the model to use search_course_docs for content questions and fetch_course_meta for schedule/metadata questions. The agents response must include a source tag: "source: chroma" or "source: mcp_meta".
  • CLI interface: Implement a commandline interface that runs three preset questions (two targeting Chroma, one targeting MCP) and supports an interactive mode for arbitrary queries. The CLI should display the agents answer and the source tag.
  • Documentation and packaging: Add a README that explains the setup (install dependencies, run mock server, start the bot). Ensure the project runs with python 3.10+, pip install -r requirements.txt, and can be executed via a single script.

Installation

ChromaDB Setup

ChromaDB is embedded in the project and does not require a separate server. The vector store will be persisted in the ./chroma_faq directory.

Running the Mock Server

The metadata service is simulated by a simple HTTP server that serves the data/course_meta.json file.

# In a separate terminal, start the server
python -m http.server 8000

The server will serve the file at http://localhost:8000/course_meta.json.

Starting the Bot

# Run preset questions
python -m src.main --preset "What is the deadline for assignment 1?,How is grading determined?,When is the next lecture?"

# Interactive mode
python -m src.main --interactive

Routing Logic

The agent uses the following routing rules:

  • Content questions (e.g., “what is…”, “how many…”) → Chroma Search tool.
  • Schedule/metadata questions (e.g., “course”, “module”, “lesson”) → MCP Metadata tool.

The system prompt instructs the model to use the appropriate tool and to always include a source tag.

Adding New Preset Questions

You can add or modify preset questions by editing the --preset argument or directly in the src/main.py script.
